Romain Virgo’s LoveSick Album and European Tour 2018 Reviewed by Gege Vibes

“LoveSick” is the new Romain Virgo’s album, released last March 30 2018 and mainly produced by his manager Niko Browne of LifeLine Music. We already knew that Romain was a talent, but it seems that this time he has improved his artistic skills more. The album, composed of 16 tracks, is a nice tribute to the strongest feeling on Earth : the love. The artist from Saint Ann, Jamaica, talks once again about the sentiment that has the strength to move the World. A lot of important jamaican names gave their credits on this project as Donovan Germain of Vp Records, Dean Fraser, Sting International and more.The LoveSick’s track that really makes me crazy is “Still” onSkyscraper Riddim by Richie Stephens. In “Still” the artist asks her partner if she is still in love with him. The meaning of the song is very beautiful because it shows a Romain Virgo able to express the most sensitive part of himself without filters.

We followed as Gege Vibes Magazine two shows of the European tour of Romain Virgo: on April 1st in Amsterdam during the event Reggaeville Easter Special and on April 8th in East London at Scala. If the album enchanted us, the live concerts were even better. On the stages the sound was a sweet reggae, contaminated with pop and soul. The melodic voice of Romain was accompanied by his very good band. The audience was involved and passionated in a no-stop show of almost two hours. We also really appreciated the voice of the young female artist in open act Sevana, from Kingston.

At the end of the days, what struck me in a positive way are especially the contents of the album’s themes. Romain addresses the “subject” of the love to the fullest singing about the lost and found ones. This topic may seem something obvious and too used in the songs, but I think that in today’s society is a rarity that young artists still compose lyrics like those. Today it seems that everything is about the money, the success based on the fake appearances and the mere fun. Romain, with LoveSick Album, teaches or reminds people that only when we are in love we could see the things with different eyes transforming the everyday routine into something of unique and unrepeatable.

Interview with Massive B, the sound of Brooklyn

Massive B is the sound of Brooklyn, New York City. It’s one of the most important sound system from Usa and one of the most prolific record label about reggae and dancehall in the world. In the early 90’s Bobby Konders, founder of the sound, remixed the Ghetto Red Hot of the Jamaican dj Super Cat. In the mid-nineties Bobby Konders with the great producer Salaam Remi remixed songs of Jamaican artists like Bounty Killer, Cutty Ranks and Junior Demus. They created a real musical genre that we know today as Ragga Hip Hop. They were really influential with their productions. In fact on the Us charts there were a lot of super hits produced by Massive B. They promoted famous names like King Kong, Chronicle, Half Pint, Nicodemus, Collie Budz, Bunjy Garling, Movado and Vybz Kartel.
Over the years Bobby Konders consolidated the artistic relationship with the veteran of the Jamaican dancehall Burro Banton, that recorded most of its productions for Massive B Records and became the third godfather of sound as well as Jabba and Bobby Konders.
Bobby Konders and Jabba are the resident DJ at HOT 97, the New York’s famous urban radio, where every Sunday night from 9 to 11 leading “On The Reggae Tip”, one of the longest reggae program of all time. They organize the most exceptional soca, dancehall and hip- hop events of the Big Apple too.
The annual concert “On the Reggae Tip” is a format devised by Massive B and recorded annually sold out.
Massive B play dancehall every week in Brooklyn for the famous Fire Sunday at Buzz NightClub.
They collect a lot of collaborations with Tok, Shaggi, Bounty Killer, Elephant Man and many more. This label of Brooklyn wrote the history of black music of the past 20 years. Massive B can be recognized today as a true institution in reggae music.

FOUNDATION SOUND / Il tributo di Richie Stephens & Ska Nation per i pionieri del genere Ska

“Ska a di original sound, Ska a di foundation sound, Ska music  is a great great  sound”, recita il medico ritornello dell’ultimo brano di Richie Stephens & the Ska Nation Band dal titolo “Foundation sound”. Da pochi giorni è online sul web il videoclip, diretto da Federico Giannace per Macola Prod e girato interamente in Salento al Sud Est Studio di Guagnano.

Foundation Sound sembra essere il singolo più emblematico ad omaggiare la musica ska dell’intero album “Internationally” da cui è tratto. È palese, come traspare dalle parole del testo, l’intenzione di fare un tributo alle legende di questo genere musicale e in primis ad uno dei pionieri della musica Ska recentemente scomparso ovvero Prince Buster.

La canzone, Foundation Sound, è stata registrata in Jamaica dal cantante Richie Stephens insieme a Ska Nation Band nella famosa Penthouse Records, gli arrangiamenti invece provengono dal Salento, Italia, da Adriatic Sound Studio.
“Prince Buster è stato un pioniere, ha aperto la strada ad altre leggende del genere Ska venute dopo di lui” afferma Richie Stephens, voce solista del singolo.

“Vogliamo rendere omaggio anche ad altri apripista del genere come Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Derrick Morgan, Toots & the Maytals, Phillis Dillion, Monty Morris, Byron Lee e i Dragonairs, il grande Don Drummond”.

Per questo progetto, il produttore Donovan Germain della Penthouse Records, ha creato una reinterpretazione del famoso Simmer Down Riddim introducendo la sezione fiati con il leggendario sassofonista Dean Fraser e il trombone di Everton Pessoa. La sezione fiati della Ska Nation Band con Gianluca Ria al trombone e Giancarlo dell’ Anna alla tromba ha creato un brillante assolo che è stato arrangiato e prodotto da Papa Leu e dal sassofonista Luca Manno.
Richie Stephens accompagnato dalla sua Ska Nation Family vuole sottolineare ancora la grande importanza delle fondamenta della Ska music, come sonorità da rivalorizzare e da riportare in auge in quanto per prima si è espansa a livello internazionale.
La musica ska è parte fondamentale della cultura e della tradizione Jamaicana.
So “Go tell to the nation that Ska music is foundation”…

DAL SALENTO A KINGSTON / “Internationally” è il nuovo album di Richie Stephens & The Ska Nation Band

Sta per uscire il prossimo 15 aprile “Internationally”, il nuovo album del cantante jamaicano veterano Richie Stephens insieme alla Ska Nation Band, formazione di nove componenti tutti made in Salento.  Tra i nomi dei musicisti spiccano Rankin Lele (voce), Papa Leu alla chitarra, Luca Manno al sassofono, Gianluca Ria al trombone, Giancarlo Dell’Anna alla tromba, Fossa Drummer alla batteria, Leo Klaus al basso e Morello Selecta ai piatti come dj.

Una sinergia che nasce dopo che gli artisti si sono conosciuti la scorsa estate durante la XII Edizione del Casalabate Music Festival sul lungomare adriatico. Appena terminato il suo show Stephens è rimasto in quell’occasione affascinato da tutto il team salentino e da come esso fosse in grado di suonare la musica ska.  L’inarrestabile cantante made in Jamaica, già vincitore di Grammy Awards e noto produttore Richie Stephens ha allora pensato di iniziare a lavorare ad un disco tra il 2015 e il 2016 con il duo salentino Rankin Lele e Papa Leu aka Adriatic Sound, entrambi reggae singers e producer, al fine di creare un progetto internazionale insieme denominato Richie Stephens & SkaNation Band. L’album di 14 tracce e già disponibile in pre-ordine è un omaggio in tutto e per tutto alla musica Ska, antenata del reggae. Il videoclip ufficiale del primo singolo estratto dal titolo “Fire fire” è già online sul web :

L’album ‘Internationally’ prodotto da Pot of Gold ed Adriatic Sound, registrato per metà in Salento e per laltra a Kingston, vuole sottolineare proprio la connessione ed il feeling artistico tra queste due aree geografiche del Mondo. Inoltre il cd dà al pubblico la possibilità di scatenarsi su queste sonorità Al contrario di quanto molti erroneamente pensano in questi brani il tono ed il sound è giovanile e frizzante mettendo in evidenza proprio la capacità dello Ska di fondere gruppi di età diverse attraverso la sua eterogeneità. Hanno preso parte al lavoro discografico alcuni grandi musicisti del reggae internazionale come Cleveland “Clevie” Browne, Dean Fraser e Stephen ‘Lenky’ Marsden. Ed i cantanti nei featuring non sono da meno: dai Sud Sound System a Gentleman e Sean Paul.

Insomma la ratio del progetto viene sintetizzata da Richie Stephens nel trailer di quest’intervista dove a breve nella versione integrale presenterà il progetto completo al pubblico: “Internationally: Jamaica & Italy in the mighty name of Ska”.
