Interview with Dawn Penn : “You don’t love me (No no no) was the first time experiencing lost love”

Gege Vibes Magazine met the jamaican reggae singer Dawn Penn after her show in Brixton Jamm (London). Her carreer was started in the rocksteady era, between 1967 and 1969, but she is well known especially for her single that became a worldwide hit in 1994 “You don’t love me… No no no”.

G.V. : Good Afternoon and Thank you for having me. I wanna start to talk about you mentioning your most famous song “You don’t love me (No no no)” extracted from the album “No no no”. Why do you think that version made you so popular ?

D.P. Honestly, was the first time experiencing lost love. It was made me popular even because of the way I delivered it and I guess I had a special kay to interpretate it. Plus it was already popular in Jamaica since 1968. The song was recorded so many times, by me most of the times in dubs, but also by International Artists, Wu-Tang Clan, J. Mills, Lily Allen, Beyonce, Rihanna, Sean Paul and more.

G.V. Indeed . “You don’t love me, No no no” was an international hit that reached a lot of charts : in Jamaica, America and Europe. While what about your prestigious works with the legendary Studio One in Jamaica.

D.P. What I could say ? I was just another artist passing through this big jamaican studio full of talents and history. I knew most of the artists there.

G.V. Tell us something about the best experiences of your carreer in Uk and especially here in London.

D.P. Experiences of my career in UK was “Top of the Pops” when I entered in the British Charts at Number 9 after I signed to WEA Corporation. Performing alongside MADNESS at Finsbury Park. When I came back when it was Number 3 alongside two hits songs as “Wet,Wet,Wet and “Big Mountain”.

G.V. What is your biggest satisfaction in your musical journey.

D.P. My biggest satisfaction is I was celebrating 50 years playing music last year and I’ll continue to feel the vibe.

G.V. Ok, can you give a greeting for our audience, please?

D.P. Buongiorno Gege Vibes audience. Eugenia Conti Blessings.

Brand New Valentine’s Day Video / Looking for Love – Tres (02/14/2018)

There is a congolese proverb that says :

“No matter how long the night, the day is sure to come”. This proverbs embodies the journey of Tres. Born and raised as an orphan in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tres had a nomadic life; moving from the couch of hostels to the harsh reality of the streets. While many of his counterparts fell to the same demise; Tres wanted to be different. Having observed the pain of the people and the violence that ever so plagued his area, he wanted to help. He acknowledged that he could make a change and figured the only solution would be to share a different message, one that would seep through their present pain. He wanted to bring some joy in a place where such a thing was foreign. Overall he wanted to make a difference!

At the age of nine, self discovery brought a solution to Tres and he realized that when he would sing, he would capture the attention of the people in his village. In this time, this became a boy’s dream and Tres concluded that this will be his life pursuit. Such dreams however couldn’t be actualized in his present environment. With ongoing political violence in his area, Tres made the bold decision to leave DR Congo at the age of 16, to pursue his dream and begin his musical journey.

In 2009, in an unexpected move, Tres performed for Prince William at Centerpoint Hostel. It was a half done performance which was enough to impress Prince William who later invited him to perform again at Clarence House. This was a breakthrough for Tres. This opportunity into the spotlight, landed appearances on the Nelson’s show, Sky News and This Morning followed.

Shortly after, he signed his first record deal with Roundhouse Records in 2010. Since then, he has supported The Black Keys while earning the nomination for Best Male UK based Afro/Caribbean Act of 2010 at the BEFFTA Awards.

In recent times, Tres musical ambitions continue to grow working with world renowned writers affiliated with the likes of Adele, Florence and the Machine, Santigold, Rihanna, Mikky Ekko, Alex Clare, Tom Odell, Jessie Ware, Ed Sheeran, Paolo Nutini to name a few. This expansion in this new territory has been lifted under new management. With new releases scheduled for 2017 , Tres is currently working on his new album under the direction of Plum Music. ‘Looking for love’ is the first official Videoclip of Tres released today on YouTube. The location of the video is in the cosmopolitan East London. The shootings were directed in coloured and artistic areas like Shoreditch, Brick Lane and Hackney Wick. A real hantem in favor of the love without prejudices and any form of racism.

In his own words Tres said : “For me, it was never about the popularity , it was about the music. My joy is that I get to share it”

Brand New Lyrics Video / Looking for Love – Tres (24/10/2017)
